The men’s water polo team celebrated the first victory in the Champions League winning Spandau with 11-4. The European Champions did their best performance this year and achieved a great victory. The team of Thodoris Vlachos had an excellent defensive presence and didn’t allow the Germans to react starting their counterattack for the qualification to the final-8. 

Key action: 

Olympiacos started the match well and led 2-0 with two goals by Mourikis and Genidounias. The Germans reacted and equalized before the end of the first period. Althought, Spandau went ahead with 2-3, the ‘’Reds’’ did a 4-0 run to boost the margin to +3 (6-3) in the half time. In the third period, it dominated in defense and attack increasing the difference to four goals (8-4). This score remained until the third minute of the last quarter as Olympiacos did three consecutive goals with Fountoulis, Gounas and Dervisis keeping Spandau scoreless and celebrated the first victory in the Champions League.

The Head coach Thodoris Vlachos stated at olympiacossfp.gr: "One of the most positive things is that we returned to Papastrateio. We always play better with the support of our fans and got a very important victory. I will use a statement of David Blatt. It was a game that if you didn’t win it, you could disqualify and if you got it, you would make an important step for the qualification. We didn’t have any difficulty and got a victory we needed so much. Surely, the first two games made us anxious. This seemed in first period but we improved our performance and showed our good image. Our effort in the  rest three quarters reflects our quality and potential’’.   

Alexandros Gounas mentioned: "It was a very important victory. We don’t want to lose any home game. We played very well in the defense as we conceded just four goals. If we keep playing like that, we have a good chance to achieve our goals. We focus on the next games so as to be better and better’’.
