A comfortable win in Hungary!
Olympiacos did the first step for the qualification to the round “16th “ of the Challenge Cup winning against Hapoel Kfar Saba with 3-0 in the first match held at the Rentis sporting hall. The Reds fought, had the control over the game, got a clear victory and gained the advantage of the qualification in the view of the second match in Israel on Thursday (19/4). The team needs to win two sets to secure the “ticket” for the next phase. In the next phase, the qualified team faces the winner of the match “UTE Budapest-Yenisei Krasnoyarsk”.
Although it was back with 10-7, Olympiacos did an impressive turnaround and was drawn against Barcleoneta (11-11) in the most important game of the 6th matchday. The Reds held a draw in one of the toughest swimming pools in Europe retaining the unbeaten run and staying at the top of the Group A with 16 points. The team showed its strength and tied with a goal by Jokovic 31’’ before the end. Playing excellent defense, the Reds kept their undefeated run. On Monday (9/12, 18:30), Olympiacos faces Jug in an important match for the first position of the group.
Olympiacos won Mataro (14-9) in the last game of the Euroleague group stage and secured the qualification to the quarter-finals. The Reds got three victories in a row and took the first position in the group securing its presence in the Final-4 of a European competition for the seventh consecutive year. Olympiacos had the complete control of the game and now, is awaiting the next opponent. The possible opponents are Vouliagmeni, Orizzonte Catania, Utrecht while the other qualifying teams are Sabadell, Uralochka, Kinef and Dunaujvaros.
A very important victory in the "battle" to secure the group's first position and qualify for the quarter-finals was celebrated by Olympiacos as won over Douniswaros with 10-8 in Papastratio. The Reds won their second game in a row after a very strong match and made a decisive step for the qualification which they want to secure in the match against Mataro on Sunday at 12:15. Olympiacos needs a win against Mataro with the Spanish team chasing a four-goal victory to be the one to secure the second qualifying “ticket”.
Olympiacos was losing by Valencia with 14 points in the Peace and Friendship Stadium, tried to overcome the score but failed to make a complete comeback and was defeated by the Spanish team (78-75). The Reds had a bad third quarter and although came back, lost for a point at the end.
Jackie Gemelos and Jessica Thomas had 14 points in a match which the fans supported the athletes of Giorgos Pantelakis.
The men’s handball team completed its European presence with a defeat by Melsungen at the Rentis sporting hall. After the good performance in Germany, the Reds were competitive despite the absences of Sanikis, Tsilis, Karvatski and were defeated (19-20) by a team with ten times larger budget. The team had an excellent European performance and now, is focusing on the Greek competitions. The fans supported the team once again and applauded the players for the great effort.
